What Does Pet Insurance Cover?
Pet insurance covers the unexpected accidents and illnesses you can’t plan for, like when the dog swallows an object he shouldn’t, or when the cat has a urinary tract infection. With a Healthy Pups plan, you can be fully reimbursed for any unexpected veterinary costs. It covers emergencies, hereditary or congenitally caused conditions, cancer, and any chronic condition.
Healthy Paws offers a simple plan that provides you with no caps on payout amounts. You can visit any veterinary clinic and your Healthy Paws health insurance plan will reimburse you based upon your actual vet bill, not some plans that reimburse based upon what they think the treatment should cost.

Pet Insurance Plan Exclusions
We’re all about helping protect your pet from unexpected accidents and illnesses and you from the financial burdens of their treatment.
The Healthy Paws plan does not cover the following:
- Pre-existing conditions
- The examination fee
A pre-existing cruciate knee ligament injury has a bilateral exclusion. If the cruciates ligaments on one leg are injured before enrollment or during the 15 day waiting period, then the ligament on the other knee is excluded from coverage. This is the only exclusion that applies bilaterally.
Preventative care
Preventive healthcare includes vaccination or titer tests, heartworm medication, flea control, de-worming and grooming.
Parasites include but are not limited to internal and/or external parasites for which readily available prophylactic treatments exist.
However, dental care, even if it is caused by an accident does not cover the cost of extraction or reconstruction of damaged teeth. If the damage was caused by an accident, however, the plan may cover the cost of extraction.
– Spaying and neutering.
– Anal gland expression.
The plan does not cover the costs, fees or expenses associated with elective procedures, boarding or behavioral modification. For more information on exclusions, please review our policy.
What is a pre-existing condition?
A pre-existing medical condition means that the condition has already been diagnosed or shows clinical signs or symptoms before your pet’s insurance coverage starts, including waiting periods. All pet insurance companies exclude pre-existing conditions from their plans.
Behavioral Conditions
Healthy Paws does not have coverage for behavioral conditions. These conditions, which can include symptoms such as destructive chewing, excessive barking, and other obsessive behaviors, can be harmful to your pet and disruptive to the whole household. That’s why ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance plans cover the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral conditions.
Prescription Food and Supplements
Prescription food and supplements can be helpful to dogs with certain health conditions. With ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance coverage, you can get reimbursed for them when used to treat a covered condition (not for general maintenance or weight management). Healthy Paws does not offer this type of coverage.
Multiple Pet Discount
If you already have more than one pet, or if you think you might add another pet to your family in future, you’re going to be happy to know that ASPCA® Pet Health insurance has a 10% multiple animal discount for each additional pet after your most expensive dog or cat. Healthy Paws doesn’t offer any discounts for insuring more than one pet.
